We are Leicester Fencing company and provide our services to both domestic and commercial clients. A feather edge fence panel is a very popular choice. A wooden fence can be used for almost any purpose when constructed correctly. A feather edge fence made of wood is picturesque, sustainable, and easy to work with. In fact, it’s the most popular fence material.

Certain woods are more popular than others. Cedar resists rot and moisture damage as well as insects. It must be sealed or stained; left untreated it fades to a softly streaked grey. Redwood is known to absorb and retain many kinds of finishes. It, too, resists rot and insects. Southern pine and spruce, while abundant, has to be pressure-treated to resist termites and decay. It is also prone to splitting, splintering, and changing colour. Because of its softness, however, decorations such as lights and planters can be easily attached. Although some wood is pre-treated, it still requires ongoing maintenance, needing to be painted, stained, and inspected for termite infestation regularly.

Wood for fencing is available in several forms. Individual components in the form of pickets, boards, posts, feather edge fencing, slatted fence panels and rails are ideal if you like to custom-build your fencing on your own.
Concrete fencing is the most durable and long lasting.

Split-rail fencing, also called post-and-rail fencing, requires little carpentry work because the rails are used in a rough-hewn form. Sometimes the panels are split longitudinally, and other times used in the round. When stacked in zigzag patterns, they become amazingly stable.

Prebuilt wood panels, often 4ft or 6ft fence panels tall and 6ft to 8ft feet wide are often purchased to set up privacy and security fences along boundary lines. Picket fencing has been popular for many years in a variety of heights with varying distances between the pickets.
Wood fence panels and slatted fence panels are put together in several different ways. Feather edge board, also referred to as close board, are beveled lengthwise; a cross section shows a triangular shape instead of a rectangular shape. A variation called waney lap fencing is made up of thin, rough-hewn feather edge boards layered horizontally. The tight fit makes the use of feather edge board ideal for privacy fences. The planks can be laid vertically or horizontally. The overlapping prevents any spaces from developing despite the aging wood. Canter rails, also called cant rails, are laid across horizontally for support. The top surface of the rail is beveled in such a way as to divert rain water away from the body of the fence.

Lattice panels, either in pre-made square or diagonal grids, are pleasing to the eye. Originally made of wood strips that are now treated to prevent insects and rot, they also are available in vinyl. They provide partial privacy but when used for vine support like a trellis fence or an expanding trellis fence, they also offer shade. Because they’re light, they require support.

Willow fencing is used for decorative borders, often mounted on chain link fencing because of its attractiveness. The thin branches are traditionally woven together in panel form presenting a basket-like surface, making them a pleasing addition to casual settings, especially when used to support vines and other plants.

Bamboo fences bring a distinctive look to a landscape when used for fencing and gates. It's also affordable, easy to install and eco-friendly. Bamboo fencing panels are showy and inexpensive. Technically a grass, they often grow several inches a day, making them the epitome of sustainability. Cane diameter depends on species and age.

Timber fence is composed of hardwood posts, but different kinds of wood are used for other components. Chemical treatments to harden the wood and deter insects are toxic and produce a greenish cast that fades with time.

Sleepers are commonly seen but few people are familiar with the term. They are the heavy beams used under railroad tracks for support. Their density makes them ideal for fencing, either as base beams or upright pales and posts. Since genuine railroad sleepers have been treated with toxic creosote or tar, lookalikes are trendy in building raised garden beds.

Not all nails are created equal, especially for wooden fences. For longevity, stability, and prevention of rust, talk to our Leister fencing technicians to learn more about ring-shanked hot-dipped stainless steel. To ensure the best match between nails and wood, you need expert advice.
